Kanuru Fort

Kanur Fort is located in Sagar Taluk of Shimoga District. Kannur Fort is a secluded fort perched atop a mighty peak in the dense forest of the Western Ghats. This fort is located at a distance of 70 km from Shimoga.

To reach this fort one has to reach Sagar 70 km from Shimoga (Shivamogga), 37 km from Sagar to Kargal (towards Joga Falls) via Talaguppa and from Kargal take a left turn at Kargal circle and travel 23 km towards Batkala Road to reach Biligaru. Here there is a board showing the way to Kanur fort through which one has to trek 8 km to reach Kanur fort, the last 8 km is thrilling and scary.

Permission must be obtained from the Forest Department to enter this area. All that remains of the fort are its dilapidated traces, but the lush green forests along with the steep slopes surrounding the fort give it an aura of mystery and sinister allure. Although the fort has lost all its grandeur and is mostly neglected, it provides a perfect place to continue the trek while trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Kannur Fort was built during the reign of Abbaka Devi, Queen of Curry Pepper. History says that during its heyday, the fort was ruled by Queen Chennabhairadevi. She was popularly known as the “Pepper Queen” as she exported pepper to Europe. Later, she died in prison during 1606 AD. The fort was left deserted and the forest took over.

Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
