History about Chandragutti

The king of Chandragutti performed a yajna to maintain peace and good health. He was blessed with a daughter (Renuka) born from this sacrificial fire. Later she got married to sage Jamadagni. It is said that she used to carry water in pots made of clay and she used snakes as pads for the pot so that she never spilled a single drop of water.

But one day Rishi Jamadagni got angry and asked his son Parasurama to kill Renukambe for her mistake. Parashurama Parashurama took his mother to a cave and beheaded her. He then left her body in the cave and took her head to his father.

Sage Jamadagni offered a boon to his son and Parasurama asked for his mother’s life. Then Renukambe regained her life. This divine event is believed to have taken place in Chandragutti.
