Sharavati Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

Sharavati Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wildlife sanctuary in the Western Ghats of Karnataka state. The river Sharavati flows through this sanctuary, from which the sanctuary is named Sharavati Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is spread over the forests of Shimoga and Uttara Kannada districts and the Sharavathi Reservoir is located within the sanctuary.

Sharavati can be reached by road or rail from Bangalore to Talaguppa (352 km) via Tumkur, Shimoga and Sagar, then another 7 km by road to the sanctuary.

Sagara, the nearest town to the sanctuary, is 34 km away and is connected by daily bus services to Shimoga, Hubli, Mangalore and Bangalore. The nearest railway station Talaguppa is 15 km away, the nearest airport is Shimoga Airport, about 100 km from the sanctuary.

The sanctuary covers an area of ​​43,123 hectares, while 12,363 hectares (and an additional 507 hectares of islands) in the eastern part of the sanctuary is occupied by the Linganamakki reservoir, a dam on the Sharavathi river was constructed in 1964–65. The remaining area is divided into core zone (7,433 ha), buffer zone (17,067 ha) and tourism zone (5,753 ha). The sanctuary shares its southwestern boundary with Mukambika Wildlife Sanctuary (Manjrekar 2000).
