Allamma Prabhu
Allama Prabhu was one of the most famous poets of the 12th century and the patron saint of the Lingayat movement that reshaped medieval Carnatic society and popular Kannada and was a very direct purist. He preached Bhakti-Vairagya to many Shivsharans and Shivsharans.
Allama Prabhu was born in a small village called Ballegavi (Balligawi) in Shikaripura taluk of Shimoga district, Kodi Math near Balligavi is an important center of Kalamukh Shaiva.
Allama Prabhu’s poetic name, (ankita or mudre), the God Guheshwara who is with everyone in the cave of the heart, is used by him in most of his poems. Vachana movement against untouchability was started by Kalaburagi Kalyan, a prominent social reformer of Karnataka and led by Veerashaiva movement.. Basavanna, Allamaprabhu, Akkamahadevi, Siddarama, Jedara Dasimaiah were famous comrades of this part.
It is believed that Allama Prabhu went to Srishaila in his last days and became a Sivaikya in the forest there. Ankita ‘Guhesvara’ or ‘Gohesvara’ of the verses of Allama Prabhu, a contemporary of Basavanna. Chamarasa has described the legend of Allama Prabhu in his poem Prabhulingalila.
Allama Prabhu composed 1645 vachanas. Allama used his art to express his thoughts about society and devotion to Shiva.
