Tunga River
The Tunga River is a major river flowing in Shivamogga district and originates from the source of the Ganges in the Varaha Mountains of the Western Ghats. From there it flows through Chikmagalur and Shivamogga districts of Karnataka. About 147 km. It flows for a long distance and joins the Bhadra river at Kudli in Shivamogga district. After this it gets the name Tungabhadra and further joins Krishna river in Andhra region.
A dam has been constructed on Tunga river at Gajanur. Another dam has been constructed at Hospet on the Tungabhadra river after it joins the Bhadra river. Thirthahalli and Shivamogga are other important towns on the banks of the Tunga river.
Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
