Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant

Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, is a plant involved in the production of alloy steels and pig iron. It is located in Bhadravati city, India. It was started on January 18, 1923 by Sir M Vishweshwar as Mysore Iron Works. It is now a steel plant under Steel Authority of India Limited.

Iron Kharkana was started under the guidance of Sir M Visvesvaraya, Diwan of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, Raja of Mysore. The main objective was to exploit the rich iron ore deposits near Kemmanagundi in the Baba Budanagiri Hills and manufacture iron ore and other products.

A preliminary investigation into setting up an iron and steel factory at Bhadravati was made in 1915-1916. The research was done by a New York-based firm that explored the possibility of making iron using charcoal as fuel. The years 1918-1922 were spent in establishing the factory. Initially, a blast furnace for manufacturing charcoal and a wood refining plant were established in the iron factory for smelting.
