Sri Bheemeshwara Temple & Waterfalls

Bhimeshwar Waterfall and Temple is located in Sagar in Shimoga district of Karnataka state. It is 65 km from Sagar city. The nearest railway station is Thalaguppa (TLGP) at a distance of 52 km. 138 km from Shimoga and 462 km from Bangalore. is far away. After seeing Joga falls it is 42 km. is far away. 03 km from Kogar Ghat, vehicles cannot reach this place during rainy season and everyone has to trek the last 02 km.

“Shri Bhimalingeshwar” temple at Bhimeshwar is located between Sagar and Bhatkal border in dense forest without any direct train or bus connection from anywhere near Kargal town. So he reached Sagar by train and from there boarded a bus going to Bhatkal road via Kogara and got down at Bhimeshwar bus stand. The waterfall trek is just 02 km from Bhimeshwar bus stand in forested mud terrain.

According to the Puranas, the Bhimeswara temple was established by Dharmaraya, the elder brother of the Pandavas, on Shivratri, when Bhima brought the Shiva linga to the place, during the Pandava’s Ajnathavasa. Right next to the temple is a beautiful little waterfall called Bhimeshwar Waterfall. It is said that when Arjuna used his arrow to extract water from the rocks, the waterfall formed into the Sarala River that exists today. The specialty of Bhimeshwar Falls is that the water does not dry up throughout the year.

It was built by the Chalukya king Bhaddega during 850-895. The temple is surrounded by a huge stone compound. This temple is a very beautiful ancient historical temple with amazing architecture.

Every year on Mahashivaratri, there is a grand puja to the Lord by the local people. Bhimeshwar Temple is a Shiva temple, a paradise for nature lovers, for many obvious reasons, the mountains of the Western Ghats are as wide as the eye can see. Bhimeshwar Temple is one of the oldest temples in Karnataka.
