N S Lakshminarayan Bhat

Nailadi Sivaram Laxminarayan Bhatta has been recognized with numerous awards and honors for his contribution to modern Kannada poetry and literary criticism. Dr. His efforts to popularize the works of bard Shishunala Sharif led to a revival in the Kannada lyric movement, Dr. It earned Bhatta the title of “Sharif Bhatta”.

Nailadi Shivaram Lakshminarayan Bhatta was born on October 29, 1936 in Shimoga to Bhatta’s father Shivaram Bhatta and mother Mookambike. A Kannada poet from Shimoga district. He was awarded the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974. After completing his MA degree from Maharaja College, Mysore, Bhatt worked as a linguistics researcher for two years and then started his career as a lecturer in a college. Very chatty, simple gentleman, excellent memory, took up research career under the guidance of Thienamshri.

After completing his PhD at Bangalore University, he briefly served as a teacher of Kannada literature at Acharya Pata School (APS College), Bangalore before joining Bangalore University. He served as a department professor and chair for more than 20 years as Dean of the College of Arts (1990) before retiring from the university.

With his early work Horalu Dhariya Kavya (Poetry on the Path of Fun), Bhatta has translated William Shakespeare’s 50 sonnets, TS Eliot’s poetry and works by the poet Yeats into Kannada.

The Masti award was given to poet N.S. Laxminarayan Bhatta in 2007. Making Kannada more accessible to the masses, his work “Reading in Kannada” is one of the most popular books ever written in the field and he has been honored with several awards including the Central Sahitya Akademi Award and the Anakru Award. His most recent work, Ghitm Kannada Sahitya Charitra, was published in 2014.

Bhatt passed away in Bangalore on 6 March 2021 (84 years) due to age-related ailments.
