Gajanur Dam

Gajanur Dam is located in Shimoga district. This dam is about 15 km from Shimoga. is far away. It is built across Tunga river for drinking and irrigation purposes of Shimoga city and other taluks of the district. It is on the way to Sakrebile Elephant Camp, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary and Shimoga to Theerthahalli. It’s a short break and a great view across the dam.

The Gajanur Dam was built across the Tunga River by the Mysore Construction Company (MCC) in 1972. The length of the dam is 770 meters, and the level of the entire reservoir is 534 meters. The S-shaped dam was constructed mainly to provide water for drinking and irrigation purposes of Shimoga city and other taluks of the district. The engineering specialty of this dam is that it has 22 crest gates and yet, it can handle the thunderous flow of Tunga river during monsoon. Water from the dam is pumped to Bhadra Dam during peak monsoon season, which is then used to supply dry areas of Chitradurga district.
