Sanskrit Village

India’s only Sanskrit-speaking village is the tiny Mathur in Karnataka, where locals communicate in the ancient language of Sanskrit. From signboards, the language taught in schools to the medium of everyday communication, Sanskrit words are airborne. One of the rare places in India to celebrate a dying language to preserve it for future generations.

Most people are involved in Sanskrit in some way. There is a school where children are taught Sanskrit. There is a Vedic school where scholars study Indian scriptures. Students from South Indian states come here to learn Sanskrit and scriptures. Mathur is about 4 kilometers from Shimoga along the Tunga River and is a center of learning for Sanskrit and Vedic studies. Mattur was traditionally home to a community of Sankti Brahmins but now includes Muslims, Lambanis and backward classes among its residents.

Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
