Shivappa Nayaka Palace
Named after the popular 17th century king Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, the Shivappa Nayaka Palace is located in the city of Shimoga. Shivappa Nayaka Palace is 310 km from Bangalore and 8 km from Shimoga city centre. It is the district headquarters of Shimoga district in the state of Karnataka. It now houses a government museum. This building is a protected monument.The palace is open from 9 am to 6.30 pm.
Shivappa Nayaka Palace is situated on the banks of river Tunga in Shimoga. This monument to the glory of Keladi Nayak is built mostly from rosewood. Intricately carved wooden pillars and motifs on the walls take pride of place within the palace. The museum inside the palace contains sculptures and antiquities from Keladi period to Chalukya and Hoysala period.
History of Shivappa Nayaka
Shivappa Nayaka (1645-1660) is widely regarded as the ablest and greatest of the Keladi kings. He was the uncle of Veerabhadra Naik. Shivappa deposed his nephew to claim the lower throne. He was not only an able ruler; He patronized literature and fine arts. His successful campaigns against the Bijapur Sultans, the Mysore kings, the Portuguese and other leaders of neighboring regions east of the Western Ghats helped expand the kingdom to its greatest extent, covering large areas of present-day Karnataka.
He gave importance to agriculture and developed new schemes for taxes and revenue collection, which won much praise from later British officials. The palace built by him, which contains his statue and many works of art of his time, is a reminder of his respect to the present generation of the region. He destroyed the Portuguese political power in the Canara region by capturing all the Portuguese forts along the coast.
