The economy of Soraba is largely driven by agriculture. The original name of Soraba was Surabhipur, here a Surabhi means Dina came and anointed Lord Ranganath with milk. That town got the name of Surabi. Surabhi became Soraba in the mouths of people coming and going.

There is a mention in an inscription on the banks of the river Dandavati that the present temple was built by a Gauda of Old Soraba. Soraba is most famous for sandalwood handicrafts.

The climate here is tropical. The climate here is classified as Ew by the Köppen-Geiger system. The average temperature in Soraba is 24.6 °C. The annual average rainfall is 1583 mm.

It is known that Sagara town has a history of four hundred years. This city existed since the time of Keladi dynasty. The lake near the ocean was so vast that it looked like an ocean. That lake had the name “Sadashiva Sagar”. Then Sadashiva left and only the ocean remained and that is the name of this city, there is a mythological historical reference.

Soraba Transport Connectivity

Soraba has decent transport connectivity, making it accessible by road.

Road Connectivity : The city is well-connected by road networks. SH 57 and Savlanga road, connecting it to Shivamogga to Soraba, which is about 88 kilometers away. Regular bus services operate from Soraba to various parts of Karnataka, facilitating easy travel for commuters.

Railway Connectivity : Soraba has a nearest Kanale Railway Station it is in 15 km, which is part of the South Western Railway zone. The station is on the Birur–Shivamogga-Talaguppa railway line. Trains from Soraba connect to cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Mangaluru, providing an alternative mode of transport for travelers.

Air Connectivity : While Soraba itself does not have an airport, the nearest major airport is in Shivamogga (Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Airport) and Mangaluru (Mangalore International Airport – IXE), both of which are connected to major cities across India. Travelers can reach Soraba from these airports via road.

Local Transport : Within Soraba, local transport options include buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis. These services help commuters and tourists navigate within the city and its surrounding areas conveniently.

Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
