Shri Marikamba Temple

Marikamba Temple is located in Sagar in Shimoga district of Karnataka state. Marikamba Temple is 03 km from Sagar Nagar, 73 km from Shimoga and 382 km from Bangalore. is far away. Thalaguppa railway station is the nearest railway station to this temple which is 15 km away.

The sanctum sanctorum has a central image of Goddess Durga in fierce form, multi-armed (eight shoulders), riding a tiger and slaying a demon. 07 feet tall (2.1 m) image is believed to have been taken from a pond on the road to Hangal.

In the early 1950s, there was a move to move the temple from the center of the city to the outer limits. At that time, the city was affected by a plague epidemic, which led to a proposal to relocate the temple.

According to the story, the goddess told a devotee in a dream that her symbol could be found in a tank on the outskirts of town and that the area would benefit from its installation and worship. Accordingly, later worship is offered to the original idol.

The temple was built in the center of the city during the reign of Venkatappa Nayaka who ruled the kingdom of Keladi and Ikkeri in the 16th century. Marikamba is the clan deity of the Nayaka dynasty.

Every three years, in the month of February or March, a 09-day fair is held at the temple site. Known as Marikamba Jatre, it is one of the most important festivals of Karnataka. It is of socio-religious importance and is attended by a large number of devotees from all regions of Karnataka. During this fair, a 16 feet (4.9 m) tall chariot is colorfully decorated and an image of the idol is taken in a procession.
