Chakra Dam

Chakra Dam is one of the most famous water reservoirs in Shimoga. Chakra Dam is a beautiful tourist spot. It is beautiful to walk along the reservoir road between the hills. Especially when it is raining, the whole atmosphere gives a vibrant feeling.

Chakra Dam is located at a distance of 90.6 km from Shimoga and approximately 24.9 km from Hosnagar. It is a small dam that supplies water to Lingana Makki. The view from the entrance is amazing. Savehaklu Reservoir is located at a distance of 06 km from Chakra Dam.

It is well known that Linganamakki Dam was built to meet the electricity demand of the then Mysore state but a problem was encountered during the construction of this dam. That is, if the inflow of Sharavati decreases due to lack of rain due to some reasons, the question of how to compensate for it is a question that bothers the engineers of that time. To find a solution to this, the engineers of that time built this Balancing Reservoir. This is probably the first river diversion project implemented in our state and country. The paths of the Savehaklu and Chakra rivers originating in the Western Ghats of Hosnagar taluk of Shimoga district were originally different, but after the implementation of this project, man has forcibly separated them from their original path.

Due to the damming across Chakra and its tributary Savehakli, these rivers have not flown in their original course for many decades. Before the implementation of this diversionary plan, the river Chakra was flowing in a southwesterly direction creating small waterfalls in a scenic valley and then moving forward to create a large spectacular waterfall at the end, it was the Creator’s rule that the lower Savehaklu comes northwards and joins the Chakra river and plunges below the ghat to join the Arabian Sea along with the Varahi, Kubja, Sauparnika and Kedaka rivers near Panchagangolli on the coast. But due to this reverse plan, these two rivers join the backwaters of Sharavati and join the Arabian Sea near Honnavar.

Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
