Humcha Jain Temples

Humcha Jain Temples or Basadis are a group of temples found in Humcha village in Shimoga district of Karnataka. They were built in the 7th century during the Santara dynasty and are considered to be one of the most important Jain centers in Karnataka. 346 km from Bangalore. is far away. Humcha has been an important Jain center since the founding of Bhattaraka in the 8th century by Jinadatta Raya, the founder of the Santhara dynasty. The present structure of the Padmavati Temple was built in 1061 by Vira Saints. While resting under the Kari Lakki tree, Jinadatta dreamed that Padmavati told him to set up his capital at that place with the help of the forest-dwelling people. Jinadatta founded the city of Pombukkapura (present-day Hamcha) and built two temples dedicated to Parswanatha. He established a shrine of Padmavati near the tree where he saw his dream, installing an idol of the goddess as the presiding deity of the temple.

The Vikrama saints built a hill basadi dedicated to Baahubali in 897 and the Parswanath temple in 950. The saintly kings gave land, gold and other gifts as offerings for worship and religious activities.

Bhattarak’s Asana at Humcha is one of the remaining fourteen Asanas of the original 36. The oldest inscription dates back to the 9th century CE. Humcha enjoyed royal patronage until Vishnuvardhan of the Hoysala Empire converted to Hindu Vaishnavism in 1117 or 1132 CE.

A 12th century Nishidhi stone mentions a woman named Piriyarasi during the reign of Mahamandaleshwara Bomma Santi, a local chieftain under the Western Chalukya Empire. According to an inscription dated 1530, the Viceroy of Sriranganagar converted from the Franconian faith to Jainism under the influence of Acharya Vidyananda. A total of 43 inscriptions have been found at this site.
