Sri Huccharaya Swamy

One of the most visited attractions in Shikaripura is the Huchcharaya Temple. Located on the outskirts of Shikaripura city on Honnali Road, this temple is also known as Bhrantesha Temple. It is 52 km from Shivamogga. The God who is called Sri Ramadhuta, Vanarayodha, Vayuputra, Hanumanta, Anjaneya is called here as Bhrantesha, Huchcharayaswamy. This temple is on the bank of Huchcharayakere and on the border of Shikaripura town.

Shree Hutcharayaswamy Temple is assumed to be around the 17th century. According to the Mysore Archaeological Department report of 1941, the temple was built by Veerashaiva Hutchappaswamy. A person named Huchappaswamy, who belonged to the Veerashaiva community who came from the Kavaledurga Math of Tirthahalli Taluk and settled in Nelavagilu village of the Taluk, made good friends with the Brahmin families of Shikaripura and finally got Brahmin initiation and built a Math here.

Once Lord Hanuman came in Huchappaswamy’s dream and commanded him to take out his idol in a big lake near the town and enshrine it. The next day, when the matter was brought to the head of the town, some people mocked him. A stone pot which was square in shape is seen to be overturned on inspection where Huchappaswamy pointed out without neglecting some people. With great curiosity it is discovered that there is an idol of Lord Hanutha in it.

An idol of Prasanna Anjaneyaswamy in this Bani, which is about four feet deep and six feet long, will be taken out. This stone Bani is still in the temple premises. When it comes to the question of where to enshrine, Hutchappaswamy’s Math is suitable. Huchappaswamy says that if this god is named after him, he will give space in the monastery. On this condition the deity is enshrined in the Math. Since then this god is known as Huchcharayaswamy.

Sri Vyasarayaswamy, who was the guru of Vijayanagar king Srikrishnadevaraya’s Asthana, was traveling in Kannada country teaching the path of liberation and dharmajagriti when he arrived at Shikaripura, a lap of mountainous nature. Notice that the idol of Lord Hanuman here is different. The swamis who had worshiped Lord Hanuman in Hampe will begin the work of worshiping Anjaneyaswami in Shikaripura. Then an idol of the original idol Anjaneyaswamy is carved from nearby Balligavi. In the act of bringing it, the nasal part of God is broken. People are again intrigued as a broken idol is not good for worship. Then, as suggested by Vyasaraya, Saligrama was brought from Himachal in North India and installed in Nasika. This difference can still be seen in the idol.

When the residents of Chitradurga and Mangalore turned their backs like hunting dogs, Dhondiya Wagha, who came to Shikaripura, fell in love with Sri Huchcharayaswamy. He begs to surrender his sword if he goes to Bidanur kings without becoming a British prisoner. Then a rare rain falls and the life of Shikaripura overflows with joy. British soldiers return unable to cross the river then Dhondiavagha dedicates the war sword to God as he said. It is still in the temple. Also, the idol of Muladeva, which was broken by Huchchappaswamy, is also displayed in the wall of the temple.
