Prema Karanth

Prema Karanta was born on 15 August 1936 in a poor family in Bhadravati. He is his father Devoji Rao and mother Kamalamma. She is a famous Kannada actor and the first woman director of Kannada. He is a Kannada B. V. Karanth’s wife. She became the first woman director of Kannada cinema with “Phaniyamma” based on MK Indira’s novel.

Prema Karanth started her career as a dramatist and directed plays like Heddayana, Daitya, Banda Banda Gunavanth and Giant Mama, mainly directed towards children. His plays were mainly written in Kannada or other Indian languages ​​translated into Kannada. He started a children’s repertory called Benaka Children’s Centre. Apart from performing plays like Ramayana, Alilu is also involved in teaching children the art of mime, costume design and use of props.

This repertory staged its first play titled “Alibaba” in 1979. His contributions to theater were directing 10 plays, producing 20 children’s plays and designing costumes for 120 plays. He was also a translator for the National Book Trust and translated a total of 08 plays from Kannada to Hindi and from Hindi to Kannada.

G.V. Prema’s association with the film world started when she was chosen as the costume designer for Iyer’s Swan Song. In 1977, he was selected as the art director for Kudre Motte. Initially associated only with art direction, Prema tried her hand at film production. His first directorial venture was based on the Kannada novel Phaniyamma and the film won him critical acclaim. The film tells the story of a young widowed girl’s struggle and courage to overcome the stigma attached to her in a male-dominated society.

She died on 29 October 2007. His contribution to Kannada cinema is great.
