Nagara Fort

Nagar Fort is a historic village located in Hosnagar taluk of Shimoga district in the state of Karnataka. It is 17 km from Hosnagar or 84 km from Shimoga.

Nagar Fort was built in 1561 by Veerabhadra Nayaka of Keladi dynasty. Later King Shivappa Nayaka (1645-1665) secured many structures to the fort. Also known as Bidanur Fort and Shivappa Nayaka Fort, this fort was the last capital of the Keladi kings.

Nagara Fort can be seen while traveling on the Sagar-Hosanagar road in Karnataka. Unlike any other fort in India, the Nagara Fort is built on a raised ground that is only a few meters high.

The fort offers a clear view of its surroundings (in all directions) for several kilometers. Most forts in India are built on hills and/or have water bodies around them. But this fort is neither situated on a hill nor has any water bodies around it.

Remains of a Durbar Hall and a temple complex can be seen inside the fort. A dry well, two water pools, small caves and several watch towers can also be seen. Red bricks were used to rebuild the walls of the collapsed fort.

Another important area in the fort is the Devaganga which is an engineering marvel beyond description. This was the bathing place of the royal family in Bidanur. Devgange consists of 7 ponds of various shapes and sizes and these ponds contain water collected from the surrounding hills. Star shaped pond and lotus shaped pond are the most attractive among them.
