In the 12th century, this town was under the control of Santaras. A third inscription of Mahamandaleswara Tribhuvanamalla Bhujabala Pratapa Shantarasa, who was Pombuchcha Puravaradhiswara, was found here, the town came to prominence in the early 16th century during the reign of Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara. There is a legend that a farmer named Chaudagouda, who was born and brought up here and belonged to a common family, got a deposit and with the help of it he built a small camp and further developed his influence.
Appreciated by his prowess, Krishna Devaraya made him a leader by giving him the leadership of eight maganas. Thus Keladi became the capital of a small kingdom in 1500 AD. The town grew very quickly. Palace, fort, lakes were built here by Chaudappa hero. He also built a beautiful Rameshwar temple. For the next 60 years it was the capital of his clan, after which the capital was first shifted to nearby Ikkeri and later to Bidanur, but this town continued to be an important city of the state till the end of Nayaka’s rule. But later its importance declined towards remaining an ordinary village. The sprawling sites of the old town, temples, lakes and monasteries stand as pointers to its past glory. Rameshwar temple in Hoysala and Dravidian style is famous here.
