Talagunda

Talagunda is a beautiful place located in Shikaripura taluk of Shimoga district. Talagunda is located at a distance of 77 km from Shimoga and 26 km from Shikaripur. It is said that earlier this town was also known as Sthanagundur. Talagunda is famous for its first Kannada dynasty, the Kadambas.

A temple for Pranaveshwara is located in Talagunda. Next to it is a stone slab with inscriptions. In front of it is a pillar with Sanskrit inscriptions. The Kamba inscriptions were written in the mid-5th century during the reign of Shantivarman (a descendant of Mayurasharma). The author of this inscription is Kubja, the court-poet of Shantivarman. He carved the inscriptions himself so that no other engraver could make a mistake.

Inscriptions indicate that Mayurasharma, a native of Talagunda, excelled in Vedic studies and went to the Pallava capital of Kanchipuram with his guru and grandfather Veerasharama. Humiliated there by a Pallava guard (a horseman), Mayurasharma renounced his Brahmin education in anger and took up a sword to avenge his humiliation. The inscription clearly describes this event.

Shivamogga is surrounded by beautiful natural spots including waterfalls, forests and hills, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and trekkers. The serene atmosphere and pleasant climate of this region attracts tourists from different parts of the country.
