Udutadi

Uduthdi (Udugani) is a small village in Shikaripura taluk of Shivamogga district. From Shivamogga it is 66.8 km. It is about 15 kilometers northwest of Shikaripura and 5 kilometers south of Siralakoppa. Shivamogga Railway Station is the nearest railway station for Uduthadi.

In the 12th century, it was the capital of King Kausika. There is an old fort here. Uduthadi is the birthplace of Saint Akka Mahadevi, a legendary 12th century poet of praise who sang the glories of Lord Shiva. In Kannada, her poems are called vachanas. The temple is built in memory of Akka Mahadevi.

Piduparthi Somnath called it Udathadi. Uda means water or water. So there is a possibility that Udathadi (the town near the reservoir) is Uduthadi. There is a large lake at a distance of 5 km near Balligave (three miles). This reservoir must have given the name Uduthadi to this area. On the bank of this lake there is a stone carved lotus idol of Gangavva. The head of this idol is carved in lotus shape. From the neck down, the lower part is bare. This is known as Mahadevi’s idol.
